Residential and Nursing Home for the Elderly Tübingen-Derendingen

2009

1st prize in a competitive design-study 2005

A former factory site was redeveloped by the city and trans-formed into a highly dense residential area. On a narrow site between a service road and a railway line, we designed a nursing home for the elderly combined with mentored residential units. The nursing home, spread over three floors, consists of two living groups per floor, totaling 80 permanent beds and 4 beds for day-care. In the center of the U-shaped floor plans, the lounge areas are adjacent to each other and use the balconies together. The top floor offers 6 small apartments for staff and trainees. Disoriented patients are placed on the ground floor and use the sheltered courtyard garden in the rear. A single-storey connecting building with offices leads to 15 mentored apartments in the adjacent building of four floors. Following the color concept of the city, the houses are kept in bright colors.
