Fire Station and Maintenance depot Weil am Rhein
1st prize in competition 2007
Hugo-Häring-Award 2011 Association of German Architects BDA
An angular building combines the fire station and the maintenance depot of the city. In the northern wing, the fire station comprises a hall for 12 fire engines, a control room, changing rooms, social and seminar rooms, workshops and storage areas. The eastern wing is dedicated to the maintenance depot with workshops, warehouses, garages and parking spaces for skips. The hose and drill tower sets a clearly visible landmark in the center of the wings. A car repair shop and a car wash form a separate building in the rear. The layout of the main building follows functional as well as energy requirements: similarly heated rooms are grouped into climatic zones. Groundwater heat pumps combined with solar panels and photovoltaic modules enable a self-sufficient energy supply of the building. Water is heated by solar collectors. Rain water is collected in cisterns for fire exercises.
