Nursing Home in Freiburg

1st prize in competition 2013

In the suburb of Herdern, the old and obsolete nursing home will be replaced by a new compact building which leaves enough space for additional apartment buildings. One of the competition requirements demanded that as many of the big trees as possible throughout the site should be saved. In our proposal, the new nursing home was placed in the northern part of the site and relates to the neighbouring retirement home. The multi-functional hall next to the front court can be used by the whole neighbourhood. Five nursing units are organized on three levels. The central rooms with kitchen are placed next to each other on the upper levels in order to optimize the operation and supervision. On the gound floor, the unit for age dementia has its own outdoor space. The top floor houses 8 apartments for residential care. The apartments on the southern part of the building site are organized in two larger buildings which respect the valuable tree population.
